It quickly became a five-star slum and today it is categorized as sheltered housing. 10 of its residents are in their 90s (one is 99) and 2/3 are over 75 including 50 frail elderly who cannot go out alone to shop or go to the doctor.A dedicated volunteer named Alice started and runs 2programs:onewhichpaysforhome-careand assistancetotheresidentswhoneedhelpwith transportationtodoctorsandothererrands, anda Basic Needs program that prevents seniors from havingtochoosebetweenfood, dentalcare, prescriptions and prosthetics. Through the years HOT has given almost $200,000 in grants to support programs at the Diplomat. The hotel is on the property that the new US Embassy is supposed to be built on. It is only a matter of time before the Diplomat is demolished and its residents dispersed. The residents are scared, and their age has made their needs greater. Add the fact that an organization that had for years split with HOT some of the funding of Alices programs, but no longer does, and the need for our funding has become even greater.HOT does not want to walk away from these people at the time of their greatest needs andisaskingourdonorstogiveanyportionof$25,000weneedtoaugment(1)the TransportationandBasicNeedsProgramssothatnoseniorshouldhavetochoose between food, dental care, prescriptions and a prosthetic, (2) an Ulpan course for the residents who never learned Hebrew, but may well be moved to a building where there are no Russian speakers and then will truly be alone, and (3) some refreshments for a weekly Social Program that brings some enjoyment to more than 50 elderly shut-ins. 33'
