Similar to all of HOTs emergency assistance programs, we only fund when all other sources have been exhausted. In the last 18 months, we helped 26 families: 22 that would have been evicted or had their utilities shut down and 4 whose children receivedscholarshipstobethefirstintheirfamilytogoto college. The father lost his job and was not able to keep up with his lease. The mother in the family was also unemployed and actively seeking a job. Through funding provided by Hands On Tzedakah, which Caridad Center matched, we were able to help the family pay their lease and not get evicted. We are also happy to report that shortly after we provided them with this stimulus the father became employed full time. The family is now looking forward to a brighter future and better financial security. With $22,000 of HOT funding in calendar year 2019, Caridad served a total of 20 families. Of the 20 families in need, 14 families facing housing insecurity received rent assistance, temporary shelter, and even construction supplies for unsafe housing and 3 received assistance with utilities. In addition to emergency aid provided, HOT funded a facial reconstruction surgery for a child who was attacked by a dog. Furthermore, 2 college-bound children of these families received scholarships for tuition. These students in need are now able to achieve their dreams of attending college, and becoming professionals helping break the cycle of poverty.Eight years ago, we started giving scholarships to students carefully vetted by Caridad. The results have been outstandingcontinuing studies, earning degrees, and becoming productive members of society rather than continuing in what could be an endless cycle of poverty. Caridads wish list continues to be funds for Scholarships and Emergency Assistance for families including grocery store food cards. We would like our donors to designate all or part of their contributions to this program with the goal of our raising an extra $35,000: $15,000 of which would be used for scholarships and $20,000 that would let us respond to Caridads continually growing need for Emergency Aid.15'
