All of its clients are families referred to it by municipal social services all of whom lack the funds for URGENT and NECESSARY repairs: for example, fixing leaks in roofs,brokenwindows,non-functionalkitchensandbathrooms,electricityandplumbing systems.Inaddition,withthegoalofhelpingitsclientsestablishpositivemomentum,whileits tradesmen work in the home, its on-staff social worker reaches out to connect each family memberwithavailableservicesintheareasofhealth,employment,educationand welfare. When living in sub-standard conditions, it is almost impossible for families to addressotherchallenges. Whenthelivingsituationisimproved,familiesoftenfindthe motivation to begin moving forward. Most families have been living in despair, waiting for manyyearstoreceivethehelpthatwillgetthemoutoftheirundignifiedandshameful situation.Itsmodel,RepairingHomes,RebuildingLives,hasproveneffectiveinhelpingneedy families move past survival mode and begin moving towards a better future. Over the past 25 years, it has helped over 5,000 families, including 402 in 14 cities in 2019.Severalyearsago,RHRL decidedthatinadditiontojustrenovatingapartments,ifthey trained local people in the town where they were working, when RHRL left, there would be trained volunteers who could do the next apartment needing repairs in the town. Think of the leveragesupplies bought at a bulk price, the work done at no profit margin, and then on top of that, a new group being trained to replicate the work done by RHRL.RHRLassists400-450familiesayearbutalwayshas hundreds of families on its waiting list.
