b'Bea is 80 years old and lives alone. She suffers from COPD and angina.She lives month to month on her meager Social Security income. She receives food from the Jacobson Family Food Pantry and gift cards quarterly from HOT Senior Assistance Program.Beas A/C unit broke down and she was suddenly without air-conditioning.Funding from HOT, matched by JFS, paid for a new air conditioner and so Bea would not suffer in the extreme Florida heat.Subsidized HomecareEarly in 2014 HOT started a new program piggybacking on what was then a new JFS Program which provides for subsidizedhomecareforfrailseniors.WhenHOT reviewed the new JFS program, it applauded JFS for this much-neededhelptofrailseniorsbutwasconcerned thatevenwiththeJFSsubsidy,therewouldstillbe seniors who could not afford even the small co-pays. So, HOT added a further subsidy which reduces the rate to $1 perhourforthepoorestoftheseniors.Inthelast12 months,thesesubsidespermitted4hoursaweekof homecare for 11 indigent seniors. HOT would like its donors to designate up to $10,400 in multiples of $208 to help support this program.Emergency Financial Assistance Program Josephlivesalonein arentedroom.Hehas profoundhearinglossduetoanuntreatedear infection.Hisinsurancewouldonlycovera smallpartofthecostforhearingaids.HOT partnered with JFS to make it possible for Joseph togethishearingaidsandtoenjoylifetothe fullest.Similar to the Financial Assistance Fund we created for those under 65 (see p. 13) here, too, HOTpartnerswithJFSandinthelast18months,HOTandJFSpartneredin$33,390of grants to 15 needy seniors whose many needs included hearing aids, dental care, wheelchair repair, air conditioners, and rent. As with all of HOTs emergency assistance programs, we help only when all other sources have been exhausted.Funding These Programs We never know at the beginning of the year what the requirements will be to fund the needs of our seniors. As life expectancies increase and savings deplete, more of them require help and their needs become greater. We need to continue to help them and ask our donors to designate up to $100,000 SO WE NEVER HAVE TO SAY NO.38'
