b'2018 HurricanesAfter the devastation of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in 2017, HOT hoped there would be a calm 2018 Hurricane Seasonbut that was not to be. Florence came first and caused massive flood damage in North and South Carolina and Georgia, thencameMichaelwiththeFloridaPanhandle getting a direct hit. Florenceleftpeopletrappedinsheltersortheir homes due to flooding and the picture on the right is one of scores we could have put here to show whatreceivingadirecthitfromastormlike Michael can do.HOT, partnering with another non-profit, Kindness Matters, worked with North Carolina state government officials andeven before the water started to recedehelped by providing food, water, and supplies so distribution sites could be up and running when roads became navigable. We also worked with the Craven County (NC) Commissioners to ensure that all students in the county received coats, gloves, and socks as the weather started to change as schools started to reopen.Hurricane Michael provided different challenges. It sounds so small, but it was simply where the eye of this horrific storm first hit land. And the winds came ashore and kept going and battered the Gulf Coast of Florida and left people of all ages devastated. In the days immediately following the horrific storm, HOT went to its traditional community partnersandmadethreechallengegrants, onetoeachofBnaiTorahCongregation,The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and Temple Beth El, creating an immediate pool of almost $100,000. This allowed us to purchase and ship more than 100,800 servings of cerealand115,200assortedprotein-loadedpop-topservings.Andthenweraisedmore funds, collected gifts-in-kind, and provided clothing, school supplies, shoes, water, hygiene products, water, beds, linens, gas cards and most importantly HOPE for people who had lost everything. The hardest part of disaster relief is not the fund raising, buying or shipping, it is making sure whatyousendisbothneededandgiventotheneedy.OurDisasterReliefCoordinator, Summer Faerman (who we borrow from the Bnai Torah Congregation TLC Program) finds the right contacts, including police, fire and school officials, to make sure we get there as soon as humanly possible with the aid that is needed, and ensures it is being distributed to the right people.56'
