10 During the 2017/2018 school year, Nevet is distributing the ingredients (hummus, cheese, tahini or tuna) for between 8,000 and 8,500 sandwiches each school day to more than 121 schools in 44 cities, towns and villages in Israel. Local bakeries supply either bread or rolls. Tablecloths, gloves and small bags are provided to the schools’ staff or volunteers who make the sandwiches. At times, the schools are also provided with yogurt and milk that Nevet receives as contributions due to their short shelf life. Neither HOT nor the municipality pay anything for what Nevet receives as in-kind contributions. Through the years HOT has made more than $2,000,000 of grants paying for more than 4,000,000 sandwiches for hungry children. Since the program began we have fed between 1,250 and 4,000 (depending on the designated giving of our donors) children every school day. Contributions in-kind and their incredible efficiency have permitted Nevet to reduce the direct cost of each sandwich to 44 cents. Using a 180-day school-year and a 44 cents cost per sandwich, in the 2017/2018 school it is anticipated to cost $79.20 per student. This means HOT donors will be able to feed children for a whole school-year for $52.80 with the other $26.40 coming from, or raised by, the schools). Assuming no change in costs, $528 will feed ten additional children during the 2018/2019 school year, and $5,280 will feed a hundred additional children. The loss of a major contributor to this program, coupled with what was already a huge waiting list, makes designated gifts to this program critical. HOT hopes its donors will designate up to $79,200 to feed 1,500 additional hungry children.
