b'Subsidized HomecareEarly in 2014 HOT started a new program piggybacking on whatwasthenanewJFSProgramwhichprovidesfor subsidized homecare for frail seniors. When HOT reviewed thenewJFSprogram,itapplaudedJFSforthismuch-needed help to frail seniorsbut was concerned that even withtheJFSsubsidy, therewouldstillbeseniorswho could not afford even the small co-pays. So, HOT added a further subsidy which reduces the rate to $1 per hour for the poorest of the seniors. In the last 12 months, these subsides permitted4hoursaweekofhomecarefor22indigent seniors. HOT would like its donors to designate up to $20,800 in multiples of $208 to help support this program.Emergency Financial Assistance ProgramJFSkeepsinconstantcontactwiththeSeniorswho receive gift cards and subsidized home care and calls HOTwhenanyoftheseSeniorshaveEmergency Needs.MarvinandSheilaareamarriedcouplein their 90s who had been living in a rented apartment in Boca Raton for over 10 years. They were recently informed by their landlord that he will be selling their apartment and they would have to move.At their age, thiswasveryupsettingnews.TheyliveonafixedincomewithcombinedSocial Security of $2,400 a month.Marvin and Sheila began to look for a new apartment right away.Afterafewweeks,theyfoundanapartmentintheircurrentneighborhood.TheHOT/JFS Emergency Financial Assistance Program paid $1,174 to assist them with moving. At their age moving into a new apartment was hard enough but going into debt to pay the moving expenses would have been more than they could handle. As with all of HOTs emergency assistance programs, we help only when all other sources have been exhausted.Funding These Programs We never know at the beginning of the year what the requirements will be to fund the needs of our seniors. As life expectancies increase and savings deplete, more of them require help and their needs become greater.
